Minister for Water Resources and Medical Education and the guardian minister of Nashik Inaugurates the innovative WasteToEnergy Plant of Nashik

In the presence of a large gathering including government officials, national and international delegates, media, general public the minister of Water Resources and Medical Education, Shri Girish Mahajan inaugurated the innovative, one of its kind; Waste To Energy Plant of Nashik on November 29, 2017. The event was graced by the Director Swachh Bharat Mission, Government of India, Mr. Navin Aggarwal; Director Swachh Maharashtra Mission, Government of India, Mr. Uday Tikale; Mayor of NMC, Commissioner of NMC Mr. Abhishek Krushna; Mr. Arne Panesar, GIZ, Mr. Dirk Walther, Project Director Waste to Energy Project, GIZ and Councillors of the Area.

Speaking on the occasion Shri Girish Mahajan said “this plant will help solve many solid waste management and septage management issues of the city of Nashik. The city will become cleaner and healthier. This innovative model is something that the other cities of Maharashtra should come forward and replicate”  

The Waste to Energy Project in Nashik, is a project of Nashik Municipal Corporation in cooperation with GIZ as implementation partner. The plant is treating biodegradable waste and septage generated in the city and generates energy through biogas for feeding it into the Maharashtra power grid. It is one solution which, through co-processing of septage (faecal sludge) with organic solid waste will generate energy from urban waste.

This project showcases a viable business model for implementation of waste to energy projects through a Public Private Partnership (PPP) and is built on a comprehensive financial and operational model. The project in Nashik showcases a model to develop and replicate sustainable Waste to Energy technology with the potential of reducing investment costs for the public sector and to achieve sustainability in operation. The project closes the loops by creating additional benefits like reduction of a carbon footprint and resource efficiency, which for India as a rising economy is of utmost importance to mitigate environmental impacts.

The project was implemented in cooperation with Deutsche Gesellschaft fuer Internationale Zusammenarbeit on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BmUB) of Germany as part of its international climate initiative (IKI).
